Acorn Room - Social Communication Difficulties Resource Base

Welcome to Acorn Room

“Be inspired by our creative learning adventure….”

At Norcot our “Early Years Social Communication Difficulties” Resource Base is overseen and run by Norcot Early Years Centre staff. The resource base is for children who have a difficulty with their speech, language and communication, providing an early boost for their learning before they transfer into a mainstream Primary School. The base caters for a maximum of 20 part time places for three- to four-year-olds, supported by four experienced staff members with regular visits from a Speech and Language Therapist.

Children will access a range of interventions including Attention Autism and Intensive Interaction and Sensory Circuits. The provision includes a main classroom, a soft play room, a sensory room and a Forest School area. Throughout the session children are supported to develop their communication skills, increase engagement as they explore, build their independence and develop their social awareness. Children in the base will also be supported to integrate with their mainstream peers in the Rainbow Room, putting into practice the skills they have been learning.

Families from both Norcot Nursery and those across Reading Borough Council can apply for their child to be considered for a space. Please note, places are decided by a panel of professionals from Reading Borough Council as a result, the application process is separate from our usual admissions.

If you would like further information about the Resource Base and details about how to apply, please contact Kathryn Sykes SENDCO@norcot.reading.sch.uk
